ISCA and HB 1134ISCA has testified on behalf of schools counselors during the hearings of 1134 in both the House and Senate. We are currently working to schedule meetings with Senate leadership to directly address school counselor concerns regarding the language in 1134. We agree that the majority of the recent changes addressed teacher concerns and we also feel that counselors were left out of the changes. We do realize that we can continue to do more to show the work that is happening behind the scenes with the Advocacy Committee. Counselors who have questions can send them to the committee using this form HERE. We hope that all counselors will take a moment to contact their State Senator to share their concerns on HB 1134. ISCA Statement on Recent EventsThe ISCA Board of Directors condemns violence and institutional racism that marginalizes people of color, especially Black Americans. The recent deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd were disgusting, appalling crimes that affect our communities, educators, and students. The ASCA Ethical Standards not only empower us but require us as school counselors to serve all Indiana students and school counseling students by breaking the cycle of racism through courageous conversations, classroom lessons, and advocacy. ASCA has recently updated their resources to help school counselors address race and equity with students and advocate for systemic change. |
